Founder/Owner/Leader: Shareef Abdul-Malik
The story of Coral Oral is as much about the larger vision of its founder Shareef Abdul-Malik, also the founder of WeBuyBlack.com, to create and operate the first black-owned supermarket chain.
This was one of the first products we purchased for the gift baskets. I knew that it might raise some eyebrows, perhaps folks asking--"why in the world are Garikai and Diana getting us toothbrushes!? Is there an implication here?" :-) No, we aren't telling you something about your breath. Part of the draw here was that this was in a category all its own. This might be not just the first toothbrush product from African Americans, but may be the only one produced by African Americans.
Combine that with the connection to WeBuyBlack.com and it was a must-get. So, we bought about 10 packages of four and hope that those of you who got it can share how they like using the product!
In an interview with Essence, Abdul-Malik described how he came to the idea of producing toothbrushes:
...the inspiration for the products came to him while volunteer teaching Black youth about entrepreneurship and economic empowerment. ... Abdul-Malik asked the class what essential item they would produce first. Their answer? Toothbrushes.
