Vashti Harrison: Pads & Book

Artist: Vashti Harrison

This artist turns a number of her works and illustrations into notepads, mugs, cards, and more. We got a number of her journals and a couple of her books for friends and family members.

I can't recall the first time I ran across Harrison's illustrations, but I do recall how cool I thought they were. I knew that I wanted to include something of hers, even if it were a small note card, but that was more strongly affirmed knowing about her connection to Hair Love. Hair Love is an animated short written and directed by Matthew Cherry (who has his own very interesting story) which won best animated short film in February 2020. The full film can be seen below:

I loved this and thought about including the book, but the story didn't fit any of the folks we were giving too--far too many boys in our family and all the girls in our family/friend network are older. So, I looked to the many other wonderful things that Harrison has available. So many of our friends journal that it made that particular product a great option.

We do have a couple of young boys, and even a brand new addition, so Harrison's Little Legends felt like a must. Harrison's interview with NPR's David Greene is a great introduction to the work:
