Harlem Chocolate Factory

Founders/Owners/Leaders: Jessica Spaulding, Asha Dixon

This was a late find, but when I saw a company based out of Harlem, started by two Spelman Sisters, how could this NOT be a part of the basket. Because I ordered this late, it only made it into a few folks' baskets.

I was sorry only to find out about this place after mid December. It meant that getting the chocolate to me and then back out in the gift baskets was going to be tough. Sadly, I only had time to get it into those baskets that were delivered locally (or went out pretty late).

But, the story here is a great one and is best told by one of the founders herself, so check out the Today show interview from about a year ago:

We have personally had a couple of the bon-bons, and they were great. We haven't yet broken into the full candy bars, but that will come soon. Meanwhile, we are hoping to hear from the few of you who got some of this special chocolate to hear how you like it.

One of the things that was neat to see, that we didn't discover until after we had put all of these different items on the list already, were that there were connections between some of them. In particular, Harlem Chocolate Factory makes some delights with Uncle Nearest whiskey and some with Trade Street Jam. (They also use Hella spirits, something that almost made it, but didn't into this year's basket--maybe next year. :-)
